The University of Miami Law Review would like to take a moment to celebrate the life of Jay Gayoso, who passed away peacefully on February 15, 2017, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Jay attended the University of Miami School of Law and received a Juris Doctor degree cum laude in 1990. He served as the Writing and Research Editor of the University of Miami Law Review and was also a member of the Order of the Coif. Jay began his legal career at Latham & Watkins in New York City, returning to Miami in 1992 to continue practicing with a focus on complex litigation, aviation law, contracts, commercial torts and appellate work. In 2006, he started his own law firm in Aventura, FL handling international as well as domestic matters at the trial and appellate levels.
Hogan Lovells Partner and former University of Miami Law Review member Alvin Lindsay reflects on Jay’s life: “Having been a journalist, with a keen intellect and consummate writing ability, Jay Gayoso was a natural in the law review. But more importantly, he was a true friend who cared and mentored those coming up. So many of the comments I’ve read about his life mention that aspect of his personality in one way or another. And above all, that is what made him great. Jay’s passing is a personal loss to me, but a greater loss to our Review and our community.”
